James Edward Meddemmen

This is the only known picture of James Edward Meddemmen, my grandfather. My sister Kate discovered this in a locket left by my grandmother and is obviously cut from a larger photograph, probably a group.

The original is very small but, scanned at quite a high resolution and "tidied up" in Paintshop Pro it has come out rather well. The first comment, looking around the Roses / Meddemmens and their offspring was that the family resemblances were "quite scary".

As stated elsewhere, James was killed on the western front in 1918, leaving his wife Kathleen (ne้ Kipling) and two young daughters, Evelyn (my mother), and Marjorie.

The following is from a newspaper cutting of the time:-

""Missing - No. 30627, Rfmn. James Meddemmen, A.Coy. 3 Platoon, 7th Rifle Brigade, March 21st 1918, Essigny, St. Quentin, Wife enquires - 27 Forest Drive East. E.11."

How sad.
