FreeBMD which stands for Free Births Marriages and Deaths. Essentially a searchable database of all the births marriages and deaths registers at the Family Record Centre in London from 1837 to 1901. The FreeBMD Database is updated on a regular basis and at the time of writing contains 92,560,889 distinct records. Why not become a transcriber and speed the process up a bit?

FreeReg. Similar to FreeBMD - "The FreeREG Project's objective is to provide free Internet searches of baptism, marriage, and burial records, which have been transcribed from parish and non-conformist church registers in the UK." Not yet searchable due to the limited number of records transcribed so far, but one to keep an eye on.

1837 On-Line, now called Find My Past (both links work). This is a "pay-as-you-go" site containing scans of ALL the pages in the Births, Marriages, and Deaths Registers held at the Family Records Centre, London. Now you can search the registers and (from the UK) order certificates from the G.R.O., all on line.

You can also search the censuses of 1841, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 for England and Wales on line, passenger list of people leaving the UK from 1890 - 1960, passport applications from 1851 - 1903, and a lot more.

1901 Census On Line. Another "pay-as-you-go" site. A different way of paying, however. Read the instructions carefully and have a good list of all the things you want to look up first.

Cyndi's List is the biggest collection of advice, software, books and web addresses anywhere on the Web. Go here before you go anywhere else.

The Greenwood Map is a map of London 1827. Useful if you want to see where the ancient relatives lived. For instance, the village(!) of Bethnal Green, birthplace of numerous Meddemmens can be found on map c9u. Look for Smart Street. That is where Charles, Elizabeth, Ann, another Elizabeth, Martha, Charles and Walter Medd were living in 1881. Can't find the street? then you need...

Streetmap.co.uk where you can find Smart Street, still where it always was.
